THE 70 WEEKS OF DANIEL
by Mac
The 70 Weeks of Daniel

That the 70 weeks ended in the destruction of the temple and the sack of Jerusalem in 70AD can be established from the scriptures in both the old and new testaments thus making all futurist theologies in error.

Gabriel told Daniel that 70 weeks were determined to “finish the transgression”.

(Dan 9:24 KJV) Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

What transgression is Gabriel speaking of?

Killing the prophets:

(Mat 23:31 KJV) Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.

(Mat 23:32 KJV) Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

Paul also states that the apostates in Israel would fill up the measure aka transgressions in killing the Lord Jesus and the disciples that Jesus stated he would send to them:

(1 Th 2:15 KJV) Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:

(1 Th 2:16 KJV) Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.

Paul is only restating what Jesus predicted:

(Mat 23:34 KJV) Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:

(Mat 23:35 KJV) That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.

(Mat 23:36 KJV) Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

Israel's destruction was the end of the age predicted by the prophets and stated by Paul to be upon them in his generation:

(1 Cor 10:11 KJV) Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

Unfortunately most if not all futurist theologies have relied on the KJV translation of the Greek word aion as “world” rather than “age” and their theologies major on an “end of world” scenario rather than and end of the age as can be seen from Young's Literal translation which correctly translates the Greek aion:

1Co 10:11 (Young's) And all these things as types did happen to those persons, and they were written for our admonition, to whom the end of the ages did come.

Gentry in his book Dominion states that the language "finish the transgression":

“has to do with Israel’s finishing, i.e., completing her transgressions against God”.

(Mat 23:32 KJV) Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

In Isaiah the concept of filling up transgressions in progress is alluded to:

(Isa 59:12 KJV) For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our sins testify against us: for our transgressions are with us; and as for our iniquities, we know them;

Bible commentator Jim McGuiggan says:

“To finish the transgression is to let transgression reach its peak or limit”.

This being true then the 70 weeks continued up to the destruction of the temple and the punishment of apostate Israel for killing the prophets in the 1st century AD - there was no interrupption between the 69th and 70th week of Daniel as the futurist theologies posit.

(Mat 23:37 KJV) O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

It was 1st century apostate Israel that killed the prophets not a future Roman Catholic church.

Jesus stated that the blood guilt would come upon the generation that heard him:

(Mat 23:36 KJV) Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

In almost a prophetic utterance the killers of the Lord Jesus said:

(Mat 27:25 KJV) Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

The above was fulfilled not quite 40 years later.

In the parable of the wicked husbandman, the householder was patient with the evil treatment of his workers. However, the time came when He could no longer tolerate their rebellion and He came in judgment when they killed his son.

The parable was spoken of the generation that heard Jesus speak.
